I wrote a big long post about how I became a Bitcoiner. It was just a load of faff that should be a much shorter post. So here it is.

When Space Karen bought Twitter, I jumped ship to the Fediverse. I set up my own GoToSocial instance but also signed-up for a couple of Mastodon accounts and later a BlueSky account.

After a while I looked for an app that could post to all three platforms — which led me to OpenVibe.

OpenVibe can also post to Nostr, a platform or rather protocol that was unknown to me. So I jumped in.

I quickly realised that a lot of the chatter on Nostr is about Bitcoin. I knew next to nothing about Bitcoin so I decided to learn. I essentially orange-pilled1 myself.

I now run a full Bitcoin node on a local server and have several DIY hardware signing devices. I’m sure everybody says it, but why didn’t I get involved sooner? Sigh!

I’ll probably pop my clogs before my accrued Bitcoin makes me rich, but I just enjoy the technology and a small degree of financial sovereignty.

And that’s that.

  1. “Orange pilled” is slang, mainly in the Bitcoin and crypto world, meaning to become a believer in Bitcoin’s philosophy (decentralization, scarcity) and potential as money, inspired by the orange Bitcoin logo and the “red pill” concept from The Matrix. ↩︎
