I’m going to take part in the #walk1000miles challenge throughout this (2026) new year.

In 2022 I decided to walk 2022 miles over the course of that year. The idea was to get a bit fitter and lose a few pounds. I recorded all my daily walks on Strava and saved the data to a spreadsheet. I’d also monitor my weight on our ancient Wee Fit.

I got fitter, the weight dropped off and I achieved my goal by walking the final short distance on New Years Eve.

The walks had become part of my daily routine so I just carried on into 2023. All that was good until sometime in July when I damaged my knee after stumbling in a hole in the road. Ouch! It really hurt.

The walking stopped and I more or less hobbled my way through the next twelve months whilst my knee slowly recovered. I resumed walking but I don’t think I was motivated enough to commit to a regular daily walk. I managed 700 miles in 2025 until a combination of family matters, a damaged foot and some shitty Autumn weather put paid to outdoor activities.

As I write this at 1pm on January 1, 2026 I’m about to go on my first walk of the year. It’s cold and overcast outside but at least it’s dry. I’m planning on walking the 1000 miles of the #walk1000miles challenge. I tried to sign up on the website but I think the page was a bit busted when I visited. No matter, I can just fly solo.

I’m going to use Google Fit to record my miles so I’m not mithered to subscribe constantly like in Strava. I’m not too fussed about weight loss although going down a few holes on my belt would be nice.

Here we go…
